MIRABIL-IAは、人工知能の発展を通じて芸術創造の中で起きている深遠な変容を探求した。AIを主として創造性への脅威として捉える言説から離れ、本展は、芸術・科学・技術の交差点で活動し、人工知能を用いて予期せぬ連想、新たな視覚言語、そして世界を知覚するもう一つの方法を生み出すアーティストたちに焦点を当てた。

本展は、AIが新たな驚異の源となるような、視覚作品、映像作品、音響作品を一堂に集めた。見慣れぬ組み合わせと、時に不気味とも言える形態を通して、参加アーティストたちは私たち自身の現実から逸脱した詩的な現実を提示し、計算システムが創造的プロセスを単に自動化するのではなく、それを拡張しうることを示した。

MIRABIL-IAの核心にあったのは、生成的人工知能の潜在空間を、歴史的な「驚異の部屋(キャビネット・オブ・キュリオシティーズ)」の現代版として理解できるという考えである。すなわち、世界の無数の形態、断片、分類、そして表象を内包する巨大な貯蔵庫としての潜在空間である。ルネサンス期に登場し、18世紀を通じて隆盛を極めた「驚異の部屋」は、動物界・植物界・鉱物界の標本を集め、自然の多様性と奇異さを捉えようと試みたものであった。

MIRABIL-IAのために選ばれた作品群は、この収集・組み合わせ・再分類という伝統を反響させるものであった。人工知能を通じて、the artistsは自然を観察し、知識を組織化し、混成的な存在を創造する新たな方法を探求した——それは、自然の驚異を集めた初期のコレクションから、アンドレ・ブルトンのコラージュやジョゼフ・コーネルの箱に見られる複合的な想像世界へと連なる系譜を継承するものである。

本展は、バン・ニュメリック#11、国際デジタルアート・ビエンナーレの一環として開催された。
