多くの伝統において、死者に寄り添うためだけに存在する特別な存在がある。魂をひとつの世界から次の世界へと導き、その後に続くものへと備えさせる存在だ。aurèce vettierは彼らをひとつの名のもとに集める――セラフィムである。*off-duty seraphim*は、単純でありながら不穏なひとつの仮説から出発する。もし最も裕福な者たちがいつか死を克服してしまったら、これらの存在は自らの存在理由を失うのではないか、と。導くべき魂を失い、セラフィムたちは方向を見失ったまま宙に漂い、やがて少しずつ別のものへと変容していく。この宙づりの状態から、本展はそのテーマを引き出し、そこから不死性についての、死を克服しようとする古くからの欲望についての、そしてそのような勝利がもたらすかもしれない代償についての省察へと展開していく。

作品群は、物質から遠く離れたところから始まる。aurèce vettierは自らのアーカイブ――幼少期の写真、夢、記憶の断片――を用いて人工知能モデルを訓練し、その素材のなかにすでに潜在していたイメージを浮かび上がらせる。彼の関心を惹くのは、それらの生成そのものよりも、むしろその生存にある。それぞれのイメージは画面を離れ、最も要求の厳しいメティエ・ダール(工芸の匠の技)の世界へと渡り、そこで自らの居場所を勝ち取らねばならない。

本展は、パラジウム箔で金箔仕上げを施したブロンズによるキャビネット彫刻、パラジウム仕上げのブロンズによる高浮彫、油彩画、画家Vincent Gicquelとの対話のなかで織られたオービュッソン(Aubusson)のタペストリー、そして「pietra dura」――フィレンツェの硬石象嵌の技法による大規模な作品群を一堂に集める。ひとつの技法から次の技法へと移っても、ひとつの緊張関係が保たれている。最も現代的な道具が、最も耐久性のある素材に奉仕するという緊張である。アルゴリズムが際限なく提案し、そして忘れていくのに対し、石とブロンズは選択を要求し、そしてそれを保持し続ける。その通過を生き延びたイメージこそが、作家が「残るに値する」と判断したものなのだ。

*off-duty seraphim*は、人工知能と精緻な工芸技術の交差点に立ち、その交差点を時間についての問いとして読み解く。すべてが生産されうる時代において、何が持続に値するのか。ある存在の目的が失われたとき、その姿には何が残るのか。非番となったセラフィムたち――off-duty seraphim――は、彼らをまだ必要としていた時代と、もはや必要としないかもしれない時代のあいだに宙づりになった、その瞬間の象徴となる。
