在许多传统中,某些形象的存在只是为了陪伴逝者,护送灵魂从一个世界前往另一个世界,并为其后的旅程做好准备。aurèce vettier 将它们汇聚于一个共同的名字之下——炽天使(seraphim)。*off-duty seraphim* 从一个简单却令人不安的假设出发:倘若我们之中最富有的人有朝一日战胜了死亡,这些形象便会失去其存在的理由。没有灵魂可供引导,炽天使们徘徊不定,方向迷失,渐渐变成别的什么。展览的主题正是从这种悬而未决的状态中生发出来,并由此展开一场关于永生、关于人类古老的战胜死亡的欲望,以及这样一场胜利可能付出何种代价的沉思。

这些作品的起点远离物质本身。aurèce vettier 用自己的档案——童年照片、梦境与记忆的片段——训练人工智能模型,让那些原本潜藏于这些材料之中的图像浮现出来。他所关心的,与其说是图像的生成,不如说是它们的存续。每一幅图像都被要求离开屏幕,进入最为苛刻的métiers d'art(手工艺)领域,在那里必须赢得自己的一席之地。

此次展览汇集了一件以钯箔镀金青铜制成的柜式雕塑、一件钯金青铜高浮雕、多幅油画、与画家 Vincent Gicquel 对话共同织就的欧巴松(Aubusson)挂毯,以及一组规模宏大的 pietra dura 作品——这门源自佛罗伦萨的硬石镶嵌艺术。从一种媒介到另一种媒介,始终贯穿着同一种张力:最当代的工具被置于最为持久的材料的服务之下。算法可以无穷无尽地提出方案,却也随之遗忘;而石与铜则要求作出选择,并将其保留下来。唯有经受住这一转化过程、被艺术家判定值得长存的图像,才能最终留存。

*off-duty seraphim* 立于人工智能与精湛手工艺的交汇处,并将这一交汇解读为一个关于时间的问题:当一切皆可被生产出来之时,什么才配得上恒久留存?当一个形象失去其存在的目的之后,又还剩下什么?那些"下班"的炽天使(off-duty seraphim),便成为这一悬置时刻的象征——徘徊于一个仍然需要它们的时代,与一个也许已不再需要它们的时代之间。
